THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARK
The complete Gospel of Mark will be presented by Rev. Shannon Wall on Saturday, April 6 at 2 pm. All are invited to experience the three-year ministry of Jesus, told only
in the words of scripture, and told with all
the words of scripture. Expect “Aha!” moments, surprising stories, and new insights.
The presentation will be held at First Congregational Church of New Milford, 36 Main Street, New Milford, CT. The suggested donation is $20 to benefit the Meetinghouse Restoration Fund, which will be used to repair the roof and trusses of the historically significant meetinghouse. To reserve seats, go to www.nmchurch.org
or call 860-354-8232.
“Gospel” means “good news.” The four Gospels are Christian sacred texts that tell the story of Jesus’ life and ministry. The Gospel According to Mark
is widely believed to be the earliest one written, and most scholars think that Matthew and Luke’s Gospels used Mark
as a source. Fast-moving, vivid in its details, and at times even funny, Mark
shows Jesus at his most human. It focuses on his relationship with his disciples and his obedience to God.
For decades after Jesus’ death and resurrection, the stories of his life and teaching were handed down orally--by the spoken word. Before many in the population could read, they heard
the “good news.” This performance, presented from memory, is a chance to hear the scriptures as they were first proclaimed.
People of all faith traditions (and no faith background) are welcome. The presentation is recommended for adults and children age 10 and older at their parents’ discretion. A Q&A session will follow for those interested.
The presentation is directed by Julia Gibson, who has directed with the Rattlestick, Barrow Street Theatre Company and Epic Theatre Company in New York City, and at Chautauqua Theatre Company, Portland Stage, Gulfshore Playhouse and other theatres. She currently teaches Graduate Acting at the Professional Actor Training Program, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she also serves as a company member of PlayMakers Repertory Company.
Rev. Wall is the Acting Pastor of the First Congregational Church of New Milford. She previously served at the South Britain Congregational Church in Southbury and the First Congregational Church of Darien. She is a graduate of Yale Divinity School, where she won awards for scripture reading and preaching, and of the Graduate Acting program at New York University.
