DIRECTOR of RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES AND EDUCATION

OVERVIEW OF POSITION
 
The Director of Religious Activities and Education is responsible to plan, direct, create, and implement programs to provide religious activities, and education opportunities for members, friends, and visitors of West Avon Congregational Church.    
 
POSITION REPORTS TO:   The position reports directly to the Senior Pastor
 
COMPENSATION AND WORKING HOURS (40 hours per week):    Position is a full time, exempt salaried position.   Total compensation may include a combination of salary and benefits totaling $50-60,000 per year.    Working hours will also include Sundays, weekends, and evening hours as scheduled with the Senior Pastor in order to meet the objectives of the position.
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION.   the Director of Religious Activities and Education will analyze individual and church-wide needs for religious and educational services, assess member participation, and evaluate changes in congregational emphasis.    From these ongoing assessments, this position is responsible for developing and implementing creative and engaging opportunities for children, youth, and adults, through church school classes, small fellowship groups, and special events such as alternative worship, camps, conferences, meetings, seminars, or retreats.
 
OUTREACH AND COMMUNITY.   Provide leadership to the church in outreach to neighbors, actively engaging with the community, with visitors to worship services, with adults and families of children and youth, as well as other interested persons.   Collaborate with the church boards and committees and the Senior Pastor to establish goals and objectives for outreach fellowship opportunities and religious education programs, to develop ways to encourage program participation from the congregation and the community
 
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
 
CORE TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES include providing leadership and working with and through others to:
 
 
ORGANIZATION AND TEAM

  • Identify, recruit, and train qualified volunteer leaders for the religious educational program ministry
  • Analyze congregational needs and desires for religious education to identify a range of opportunities and programs to meet such needs and that will encourage participation from all age groups
  • Work with the ministerial staff, the CE Board, and other program leaders in planning, evaluating and coordinating all youth ministries of the church
  • Collaborate with various church boards and committees to plan, develop, oversee and implement a variety of engaging programs and activities for adults involving education, mission, outreach, and fellowship
  • Attend workshops, seminars, or conferences to obtain program ideas, information, or resources
 
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION PROGRAM
  • Develop religious education programs for all ages within the congregation
  • Provide staff leadership at regular education planning meetings and in selecting appropriate curricula or class structures for educational programs
  • Plan and direct youth fellowships, retreats and mission trips, as well as youth involvement in worship and music
  • Identify and engage new resources such as, but not limited to, public speakers, thought leaders, scholarship authorities, discussion groups, book clubs and reviews, etc. in support of education goals and objectives
  • Develop study groups, Sunday and weekday classes, and special events such as camps, conferences, meetings, seminars, or retreats for adults and youth
  • Locate and distribute resources, such as periodicals, books, training materials, and curricula, to enhance the effectiveness of educational programs
 
COMMUNITY RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES
  • Be alert to opportunities for and provide leadership in reaching the unchurched and churchless and promoting West Avon Congregational Church as an attractive organization for belonging
  • In collaboration with the Senior Pastor, provide leadership and training to the congregation in recruiting efforts to reach and invite the unchurched and churchless to West Avon Congregational Church
  • In collaboration with the Senior Pastor and the church boards and committees, develop and implement programs in response to perceived community needs for social services
  • In collaboration with the Senior Pastor and the church boards and committees, assist in fostering networking and collaboration among local churches
 
MARKETING AND PLANNING
Develop promotional and marketing strategies for West Avon Congregational Church as an attractive, relevant, and engaging religious organization open to everyone
  • Responsible for managing regular church messaging and publicity to the congregation and to the public through various media, including, but not limited to, the bulletin boards and video center in the hallways, the church website, social media platforms, newsletters, press releases, and other methods
  • Establish and utilize feedback systems for regularly assessing the effectiveness of promotional activities and methods and respond to emerging opportunities to improve messaging within and outside of the church
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • The ideal candidate will be a leader and will have experience in directly and indirectly managing staff and volunteers of different disciplines and skill levels to produce attractive and meaningful programs to the church
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills, possessing a genuine concern and capacity to relate with all people
  • Excellent program management, time management, written and verbal communications skills
  • Good office automation and presentation/marketing communications skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Christian Education, religious studies, ministry, education, or a related field, or the equivalent education and experience relevant to performing the duties of the Director of Religious Activities and Education
  • Minimum of 5-7 years relevant work experience
  • Able to pass screening and willing to abide by UCC Safe Church Policy
