Position Vacancy – Part Time

Title:  Caretaker of Irons Homestead

Reports to:  Meeting and Retreat Center Director

Purpose: To carry out the mission of the Conference by maintaining the Outdoor Ministry Site at Irons Homestead and providing for warm hospitality and effective retreat meeting space for guests. 

Nature and Scope: The Caretaker shall provide care and maintenance of the buildings and grounds at the property known as “Irons Homestead”, owned by the Rhode Island Conference of the United Church of Christ (RICUCC) in Glocester, Rhode Island.

Principle Activities: Included but not limited to the following:
Implement system for regular maintenance and upkeep of camp buildings and grounds, including routine duties such as mowing, painting, etc.
  • Grounds Maintenance:  Maintain critical areas of the campus as required by weather and seasonal needs, including – but not limited to:
    • Spring /Summer:   mow and maintain lawns, flower bed & pots, parking areas, roads and pathways.  Prepare and maintain beach area. Oversee yearly clear-out and maintenance of septic system. 
    • Fall:  rake/collect and dispose of leaves and branch removal as needed.  Put away outdoor recreation equipment.   Winterize seasonal equipment.
    • Winter:  oversee snow removal, plowing and sanding, as required.
    • Year-round:  separate recyclables, oversee trash collection and insure removal of same.  Keep gutters and ditches clear.  Maintain trails and outdoor equipment.
  • Buildings Maintenance:  Monitor and maintain all structures on the property
    • Check buildings and activity areas before and after each scheduled use.  Arrange for cleaning service, as needed. 
    • Monitor electric, plumbing and heating systems regularly, to insure they remain in good operating order.  Conduct minor repairs and supervise contractors and service repair personnel, as needed.
    • Monitor supplies such as fuels, oil, insect sprays, etc; and advise Meeting & Retreat Center Director when reorder is needed.
    • Winterize all buildings and plumbing, including barn and camp office.
    • Coordinate with volunteers for Spring and Fall clean up days.
  • Equipment Maintenance:   Conduct preventive maintenance procedures on all power equipment:  mowers, tractors, hand tools, etc.; insure that all equipment is operated according to standard safety procedures, which include the use of protective eyewear, gloves, and reinforced footwear.  Maintain appropriate records and inventory.
 Provide Guest Services 
  • Caretaker shall act as the on-site representative of RICUCC, and as such, shall be responsible for the comfort, safety and security of the guests and campers utilizing the campus.
    • Unlock/lock the Lodge and all buildings before/after a scheduled rental.
    • Provide guests with an initial safety run-down (oral and in writing) of camp rules (including wildlife disclaimer), safety procedures, and operating instructions.
    • Check condition of facility and perform inventory at end of each group’s stay.  Provide a written report to the Meeting & Retreat Center Director of any items to be reordered.
 Overall Responsibilities
  • Perform all duties in accordance with prescribed regulatory compliance guidelines, including local, state, and federal guidelines as well as American Camp Association accreditation standards. 
  • Respond to emergencies on physical plant and site.
  • Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory.
  • Store equipment for safety.
  • Develop a schedule for checking the physical plant and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
 Other duties as assigned.
The successful applicant will be a proven self-starter and have a combination of knowledge and experience of carpentry, electrical, plumbing and heating systems’ maintenance, and of such power equipment as needed to maintain the property.  An ability to trouble-shoot and work independently is required.  Experience in camping/ campground management is considered a plus.  The successful applicant must be able to engage in light, moderate and occasionally hard physical labor.
Education and Experience
Must be at least 21 years of age
High School graduate or equivalent
Such a combination of education and experience as can efficiently achieve the above duties and responsibilities.

Job Requirements
Live on site in the farm home and be available for service when guests are on the property all utility included.
Provide guest services for Retreats, including Providence Experience mission groups.
Maintain all buildings and grounds on site.

Housing valued at $20,000 per year, including Internet, phone, all utilities plus a cash stipend of $3,000 annually, prorated sum to be paid on the 15th and 30th of each month.

Minimum Qualifications
  • The caretaker shall be required to submit to and pass a background check paid for by the Rhode Island Conference.
  • The caretaker must possess basic computer skills, which include but is not limited to email, scanning, word processing.
  • The caretaker must possess and maintain a valid Rhode Island driver’s license.
  • The caretaker must possess the physical attributes necessary to oversee and maintain the camp.
