WCHMU Anna Harris Andrews Fund Grant Program

Caring Ministries

The 1936 bequest that created this fund specified that "The income from this fund shall be used for work among non-English speaking women in Connecticut similar to that now being done by the Schauffler Missionary Training School of Cleveland, Ohio, with preference for the needs of the City of Hartford." In 1943 Schauffler College was recognized by the American Association of Schools of Social Work and became a charter member of the National Council on Social Work Education. At the time Anna Harris Andrews executed her will, it is very likely that the Schauffler Missionary Training School was training women (men were admitted to Schaufler College in 1953) to do what would now be called social work. The current interpretation of Anna Harris Andrews' instructions is to fund projects or programs that will improve the quality of life and well being of non-English speaking women in Connecticut, with preference for the needs of the City of Hartford. Given the history of social work, preference will be given to projects and programs that address poverty and its resultant problems.
