			<itunes:author>Rev. Eric S. Anderson</itunes:author>
			<itunes:subtitle>Focused on the Fire</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>We get very excited about the tongues of fire above the heads of the apostles, but they didn't make quite so great an impression on the crowds on the first Pentecost. They were amazed and bewildered by what they said, and the languages they said it in. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are not stark clarity, says Eric Anderson, but mystery and a new commission. Young people took up their commission to believe and to declare at last Friday's Youth Revival in Bridgeport, and so have fourth and fifth graders in Milford who have produced their second video, this one on the miracles of Jesus.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Cecile Gilson has been feeling the joy of God's gift: the appointment of our next Conference Minister, Kent Siladi. She shares some of the journey and much of the joy in her reflection today. Church World Service has issued an emergency call for new Cleanup Bucket donations after 2,500 of them have been shipped to the Midwest. At Silver Lake, Pam Arifian has been appointed Sustainability Director and will oversee the new Environmental Justice Center at Silver Lake, providing both educational programs and serving as a communications nexus for advocates around New England and the UCC. Just down the road in Cornwall, they're celebrating their recycling efforts for Mission 4/1 Earth and every day of every year.</itunes:summary>

			<itunes:author>Anne and Tim Hughes</itunes:author>
			<itunes:subtitle>Outdoors</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Our bodies are adapted for the outdoors, and we need encounters with nature to restore ourselves and reduce our stress. "Jesus went to the mountain, to the lakeshore, to the woods, to the garden," say Anne and Tim Hughes, "to pray, to preach, to just be with his friends." In the news, we celebrate the election of Kent Siladi as Conference Minister, and look ahead to the 20th anniversary of our partnership with the Kyung-Ki Presbytery in South Korea. Last Saturday, Christians met in Boston for a day of Climate Revival, and just yesterday, Somers raised the bell into place in the frame of their new church's steeple.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Jesus warned Peter that others would take him where he did not wish to go. This came home pretty sharply for Mike Penn-Strah, kept housebound for six weeks by a knee injury after a fall this winter. Despite chafing over his difficulty, he found, "When I least expected it, and barely attempted to perceive it, I received blessing upon blessing." Mystic Congregational Church UCC offers a heartfelt happy birthday to their South Korean partners, the Dongbu Sun-lin Church, via video. Newtown pastor the Rev. Matt Crebbin reminds us that there is far more work yet to be done to address gun violence.</itunes:summary>

			<itunes:subtitle>Remember... We Remember</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>ConferenceCast offers two reflections for Holy Week: Eric Anderson has changed his mental picture of the day of Jesus' crucifixion. Evil, he observes, does not wait for night, but does its ill work in the full light of day. In the news, churches engage in Holy Week worship, including a dramatic painting of the crucifixion on the steps of South Church in New Britain. Mission 4/1 Earth begins on Monday, and we look forward to exploring the Vibrant Colors of Faith in May. We prepare to say farewell to our Policy Advocate, Kim Harrison, as she takes up new challenges. And Tamara Moreland celebrates Easter - that invitation to remember God's love for us in Jesus' death, resurrection, and presence with us on the journey. Alleluia!</itunes:summary>

			<itunes:subtitle>The Donkey</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>In G. K. Chesterton's imagination, the donkey who carried Jesus into Jerusalem was a creature who considered himself derided and unloved, feelings with which we might be familiar, suggests Patsy Bjorling. But if this creature could be found worthy to bear Jesus, so too does God find us worthy of "being raised in glory." We congratulate our churches in Portland and Spring Glen in Hamden for winning two Silver Lake camperships, and we thank them and those other churches who have made pledges for 2013 Basic Support giving. Michael Piazza celebrates the urgent, compelling visions for ministry that liberate generosity, and we explore creative worship in two Connecticut churches.</itunes:summary>

			<itunes:subtitle>Mary of Bethany</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Karen Ziel offers a poetic reflection today on Mary of Bethany, whose anointing with perfume just days before his crucifixion touched Jesus so profoundly. Nearly 200 concentrated on Leadership Matters in South Glastonbury last weekend, and Silver Lake has committed to 1,000 hours of Earth care for Mission 4/1 Earth. Newtown clergy urge Congress to pass safer gun laws, five congregations honor the Amistad story together, and we ask for prayers: for the new Pope, Francis, for our ecumenical partners and their neighbors on the Korean Peninsula, and for our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender brothers and sisters as marriage equality comes to he U.S. Supreme Court later this month.</itunes:summary>

			<itunes:subtitle>Second Chances</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>The young man leaves home with half his father's wealth, squanders it, and returns humbled to find an unanticipated open-hearted welcome. "Apparently, we worship the God of second chances!" says Chuck Wildman, but cautions, "Love and forgiveness are one thing. Condoning what the son has done is another. The son will have to earn his place at the family table." The big news from the Connecticut Conference this week is the announcement of the Rev. Kent J. Siladi, currently Florida Conference Minister and a former Regional Minister here, as the candidate for Connecticut Conference Minister. Conference delegates and ministers will meet to hear from him and to take the final vote on April 20th. In Farmington, a Lenten program examines body, mind, and soul with some depth, and this coming Sunday many churches will receive the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. Please: give generously.</itunes:summary>

			<itunes:author>Rev. Dr. Michael Ciba</itunes:author>
			<itunes:subtitle>Life from a New Perspective</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Michael Ciba has heard the judgments too many times, the ones that blame the sufferers in tragedy for their own suffering. Jesus heard them, too, and turned them on their heads. Rather fretting about the whys and wherefores of what happens to us, Jesus calls us to love God and love our neighbor: the most important things we can do. Some 4th and 5th graders in Milford sought to offer that same messages of a Still Speaking God, and they've produced a video about ways they see God speaking as people help each other. Learn more about planting trees during Mission 4/1 Earth, and take a look at Governor Malloy's recommendations to address gun violence. Archivist John Van Epps' Touchstone with History celebrates the life of a 19th century African American pastor in New Haven, Amos Beman, active in the emancipation and enfranchisement movements in Connecticut.</itunes:summary>

			<itunes:subtitle>Do Something for Your Soul</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>The beginning of Lent brings its temptations - self-aggrandizing public declarations among them - but it also brings its blessings. "A self-denial that honors the gifts in setting them aside for a time, a smiling extension of self to give new gifts to others, a discipline of prayer that revls in the nearness of the Divine: these are blessings for the soul," says Eric Anderson. "Do something for your soul this Lent." Connecticut spent much of last weekend digging, plowing, and blowing out after a massive blizzard that left two feet and more of snow across the state. Next week: coverage of the March for Change rally, which called for common sense gun regulation.</itunes:summary>

			<itunes:subtitle>Desperately Difficult to Do</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>With the call of Jeremiah to speak and Paul's hymn to love at hand, Eric Anderson reflects on that most difficult of Biblical injunctions: to speak the truth in love. "Let us speak," he says, "setting others' interests at or above our own." <description>With the call of Jeremiah to speak and Paul's hymn to love at hand, Eric Anderson reflects on that most difficult of Biblical injunctions: to speak the truth in love. "Let us speak," he says, "setting others' interests at or above our own." <itunes:author>Rev. Dr. Thomas Clough</itunes:author>
			<itunes:subtitle>Grieving Loss</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>In a close look at the story of Jesus' encounter with a wealthy man -- one which ends when the man leaves sorrowful -- Tom Clough finds a tale not of refusal, but of grieving. Likewise, he says we find ourselves compelled to give up beloved but no longer appropriate ways of being religious, and the giving up is hard. We'll need each other, and God, to do it. Silver Lake's Retreat Center takes on new colors when a quilting and service group stays the weekend, we wish a happy 90th birthday to Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, Mississippi, Niantic meets a woman on a special service quest, and members of the Council of Hispanic Ministries engage in serious conversations. </itunes:summary>

			<itunes:subtitle>Meet the Challenge</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>As we remember our Neighbors in Need with our financial support this coming Sunday, Ineke Mitchell challenges us to take up he childlike attributes of awe, wonder, and creativity as well. She holds up the example of Candy Chang, who took her grief over a friend's death and found a unique way to lift up her community with it. In the news, we prepare to say farewell to Ineke, who will leave for an interim ministry call in Tolland, Connecticut, on January 1. <itunes:summary>Jesus warned his disciples not to become "salt that has lost its saltiness." "Mark links salt with peace," she says in today's reflection, making it a symbol of integrity and wholeness. "Being at peace with one another is about wholeness in the community." On Monday and Tuesday, ministers of the Connecticut Conference found inspiration and wholeness under the guidance of Bishop Yvette Flunder at this year's General Association gathering. She urged the church leaders present to take up the strength of the United Church of Christ, and take risks for the welcome of all. Other leaders came to North Haven on Saturday to learn more concretely about extending and Open and Affirming welcome. And we hear from Archivist John Van Epps on the lengthy history of revival in New England.</itunes:summary>

The Connecticut Conference will debate a new allocation of its Basic Support income from its churches at the Annual Meeting in October, and the Conference Minister Search Committee has entered that exciting time when they've begun speaking with real potential candidates. <itunes:subtitle>The Good Coach</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>What is God like? Charlie Kuchenbrod finds some resonance with the notion of God as a Good Coach, always yearning for us to find the best way through the difficult places in our lives, and to find meaning in that effort. "God yearns for each of us to be the heroes of our own story." Faith Church in Hartford welcomes the General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ, the Rev. Geoffrey Black, to their pulpit for their annual recognition of men's ministries. His message: look deep into the heart to find God's surprises. And in Kensington, they're celebrating the 300th anniversary of their church this year, with some pageantry and color.</itunes:summary>

In Bridgeport, a congregation that had contemplated closure finds itself an "encore church," with a revived sense of life and purpose. Union's pastor, Robert LaRochelle, has just published a new book on building a positive relationship between the Protestant and Roman Catholic traditions, and we're looking forward to next week's Silver Lake Golf Tournament. At South Church in Granby, they're teaching children to dream of appreciation and acceptance of difference, and at the Conference, we're dreaming of a new monthly publication to premiere in September. <itunes:summary>Michael Ciba doesn't always sleep well, which lends a particular meaning to Psalm 4's words of assurance that God is with us. "Whether we sleep or lie awake," he says, "we can trust in God's presence." The Somers congregation has recovered use of parts of their building, so that their community suppers and food pantry are coming home. A plan to rebuild their meetinghouse went to their Church Council this week, and they may be able to break ground this summer to rebuild what was lost in a New Year's fire. The April ConnTact asks the question, in an age when the "spiritual but not religious" outnumber mainline Protestants, does Church matter? Our writers think it does, whether it's in a New England meetinghouse or outdoors at Silver Lake. Church matters because it reveals and emulates the love of God.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In a world where we make many choices, Jesus asks us to choose as well: to choose to pick up our own "cross," our own mission and purpose in life, to which God has called us. "Lent invites us," says Barbara Libby, "to consider the choices we make on our journeys of faith." In the news, the Connecticut General Assembly is in session, and Conference Policy Advocate Kim Harrison describes some of the important business they will be considering. Health care remains a very important issue, now in the hands of the SustiNet Cabinet and Exchange board, while in the Capitol murder victims' families speak out to abolish the death penalty.</itunes:summary>

This Lenten season, she asks, what practice or experience will fill your soul? The UCC celebrates the 1,000th congregation to adopt a covenant to extend the same open and affirming welcome to LGBT persons as it does to every member. The Conference sets an ambitious goal: 75% of local churches to make a pledge toward Basic Support of national and Conference ministries of the UCC. In Hartford, people of many faiths came out to pray for leadership that will bring universal health care coverage to Connecticut's citizens. Great things have been done by our local churches, who met and surpassed giving goals to Conference and national ministries of the UCC in 2011, and we are profoundly grateful. In Saugatuck the congregation has begun the long, hard work of recovering and rebuilding following the November 20 fire that still keeps them from using their building. <itunes:subtitle>For Thanksgiving Week</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Like a game of Hide and Seek, observes Barbara Libby, "Ready or not, here comes Advent!" -- the first Sunday of this season of preparation is this weekend. It comes with contradictory expectations and emotions, but also with a critical difference. In this game, God is seeking us. We wait to be found by the one who loves us best. We lift our prayers and concern for our church in Saugatuck, severely damaged by a fire on Monday night, and for those who serve us in harm's way. We're privileged to be able to share some of the wisdom of UCC minister and Navy chaplain Andrew Sholtes today. And, of course, it's Thanksgiving, so there's a special word from the Conference staff. Have a joyous holiday, everyone!</itunes:summary>

<description>Like a game of Hide and Seek, observes Barbara Libby, "Ready or not, here comes Advent!" -- the first Sunday of this season of preparation is this weekend. <itunes:subtitle>Noticing -- and Acting</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Karen Ziel notices things, but she is acutely aware that observing is only the first step. "What we are called to do," she says, "is to risk and to act." That was the point Jesus strove to make in his story of the division between the sheep and the goats, and it is the foundational call of Christians. "We act because our discipleship demands it." We acted in eleven powerful days of ministry for the hungry with Mission:1, and are called now to continue that work. People still hunger. UCC worship leaders explored blessing at a special conference in Boston, concluding with Ben Guess' sermon during the Mission:1 celebration. And in Storrs, they've given $35,000 to outreach ministries as they've finished an accessibility project at the church. Thanks be to God!</itunes:summary>

			<itunes:subtitle>A Parable of Extravagant Grace</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>It may end with the words "thrown into the outer darkness," but Mike Penn-Strah reads the parable of the talents as a story of extravagant grace. "God has gifted each one of us individually, and together, as congregations, with enormous amounts of love, forgiveness, and grace," he says. "God wants us to spend those gifts extravagantly, outrageously, and boldly." And speaking of extravagance, we're on the tenth day of Mission:1, and the gifts have been rolling in. One goal has been achieved and more, and we've great confidence we'll achieve the others as well. They beat their target in Darien, after all, to the surprise of the very planners themselves. Why, she wonders, has it been met in places with riot police and tear gas? Meeting with protesters at Occupy Hartford last week, she heard the stories, and her eyes filled with tears, as she realized one young man was asking her to be Christian. In Connecticut, a winter storm left nearly a million homes and businesses without power, and UCC churches sought to offer help where they could. <itunes:subtitle>Carrot or Stick</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>The prophet Micah warned the leaders of his day of a stick -- the consequences of their willful blindness to the sufferings of their people. Jesus offered a carrot -- the promise that God would reverse the fortunes of the most vulnerable. Which will we do, wonders Eric Anderson: can we as a society accept the carrot and reverse the misfortune, or will we continue to whittle the stick of our own despair? The voices from the Annual Meeting speak words of challenge and hope, testifying to the role of the Church to inspire great acts of kindness. Clergy visit Occupy sites, and we look back over the centuries to a time when people in Connecticut were truly scared of witches. And as three churches set high goals to assist the hungry in the next two weeks, we ask again: What is your church doing for Mission:1?</itunes:summary>

But Patsy Bjorling takes up the Apostle Paul's reassurance as well: "In God's presence and through God's presence we will find peace with ourselves and one another." The Connecticut Conference welcomes the Rev. Mia Douglas to facilitate Sacred Conversations on Race, church folks gather to renew the work of welcoming gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons with open and affirming arms, and to make accessibility for people with disabilities a matter of mind and heart as well as matter. Finally, we celebrate a milestone: ConferenceCast has brought spiritual reflections, news, and upcoming events to you now for a full year. Hurray!</itunes:summary>

			<itunes:subtitle>Thinking Inside Out</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>In the Gospels, Jesus loves to tell parables. Ineke Mitchell calls them "curve balls... gotcha stories that invite the hearers to new ways of imagining what is possible with God." She has a story of her own for us this week; a "kingdom story" that comes from the world itself. Other things are happening around the world, too: Facebook managed to scramble the denominational affiliation of many of our churches last week, and we're getting organized for "Moving Planet," a demand for action to limit the damage caused by humans on our atmosphere. There are great events coming up in the fall, and there are some great voices from Silver Lake in this week's ConferenceCast.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The Rev. Susan Tarolli experienced the "reward of the prophet" last week, when she participated in the service of covenanting between the Storrs Korean Church and the Windham Association, welcoming that congregation into the United Church of Christ. As she reflects this week, that cannot be the end, but only the beginning, of a never-ending welcome for the people of that church and, indeed, all those who enter our churches. Conferees will soon be arriving at Silver Lake Conference Center, and you can hear just a few (this week; more coming!) of the voices that will be warmly welcoming them as they begin their week-long adventures of community, faith, and fun. General Synod starts next week, considering a number of important issues, and even rocking away to support new and renewing congregations.</itunes:summary>

<description>Sometimes things just don't arrive as we expect. Susan Tarolli's reflection on the arrival of God's Messiah asks how God With Us might surprise us, just as Jesus did many years ago. Interfaith health care advocates hear from Governor-elect Dan Malloy, and parishioners at First Church of Christ in West Hartford begin the season in the bustle of a Bethlehem marketplace.</description>

			<itunes:author>Rev. Michael Ciba</itunes:author>
			<itunes:subtitle></itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This week's reflection, by Valley/Northwest Regional Minister Michael Ciba, visits the prophet Jeremiah during the siege of Jerusalem. Despite the invading army, Jeremiah bought a field: a sign of hope in a doubtful future. "Sometimes, we need to do something for the sake of the future, even if we don't know exactly what that future will look like or if we'll be around for it," says Michael Ciba. It's a way to strengthen and to manifest our trust in God.

In the news, the September ConnTact is on the theme "Journey with Jesus... 400 Years of Transforming Mission," telling over a dozen stories of our local churches engaged with their brothers and sisters across the seas. Manchester pastor the Rev. Joyce O. Crutfield reports on the New Church Leadership Institute in Atlanta, and we look forward to a new Stillspeaking video for National Friend-Raising Weekend November 5-7. Among the events coming up is the Annual Meeting on Oct. 22-23 in Middletown.
