The Moderator, the Rev. Bridget Fidler of Suffield; the Assistant Moderator, Dr. John Ramos of Norwalk; and the Chair of the Board of Directors, the Rev. Richard Koenig of Plantsville, join in inviting you to the One Hundred and Forty-third Fall Annual Meeting of the Connecticut Conference of the United Church of Christ, Friday and Saturday, October 22 & 23, 2010 at Middletown High School, 200 LaRosa Lane (off Newfield Street), Middletown.
2010 marks the 200th anniversary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), America's first foreign mission society, whose charter was signed in Noah Porter’s study in Farmington, Connecticut. We will commemorate this bold initiative and consider the next 200 years of mission and ministry. Please display the enclosed poster prominently and give copies of this letter and other enclosures to your delegates.
The Keynote Speaker will be Dr. Robert Orr, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Strategic Planning and Policy Coordination since 2004, and the highest ranking U.S. citizen at the UN. His responsibilities include running the Secretary-General’s Policy Committee and serving as the principal policy advisor to the Secretary-General on climate change, food security, global health, counter-terrorism and the UN reform agenda.
Dr. Orr joined the United Nations from Harvard University, where he served as the Executive Director of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government. Prior to this, he served as Director of the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, D.C.; as Deputy to the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations; and as Director of Global and Multilateral Affairs at the National Security Council in the White House. Dr. Orr received his Ph.D. and M.P.A. in International Relations from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University, and his bachelor’s degree from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).
Enclosed please find two Resolutions of Affirmation to be presented at the Annual Meeting. Please read them carefully before the meeting. Resolutions and Affirmations are an integral part of Annual Meeting business and need careful consideration. Also enclosed is the section of the Bylaws defining voting membership for the Annual Meetings and the number of delegates for each church.
The Steering Committee has designed a two-day meeting beginning on Friday afternoon. Registration, the agenda and other items will be available online in September. Among the highlights being planned are:
Authorized Ministers' Lunch and Program at the Crowne Plaza Cromwell, 100 Berlin Road, Cromwell, CT 06416, will be Friday, October 22nd from noon to 3:30 pm. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Sarah Drummond, Associate Dean of the Faculty & Associate Professor of Ministerial Leadership Andover Newton Theological School. Please see the enclosed flyer for more information. The program will include honoring those ordained 50 and 25 years. Registration for the Annual Meeting will take place at this event for those who attend.
Annual Meeting: The Rev. Charles Wildman will deliver the Interim Conference Minister’s address on Friday evening. Rev. Wildman will have begun his term as Interim Conference Minister at this time. Rev. Wildman is recently retired after a distinguished pastoral career. The Board of Directors is pleased he will serve the Connecticut Conference during this time of transition.
Saturday will include the Keynote Address by Dr. Robert Orr. Workshops will be held on a variety of topics relating to Global Ministries and other informative topics. Conference business will also be conducted in plenary sessions.
Youth Delegates will continue to be involved in the meetings this year as regular delegates.
