MIDDLEFIELD (06/06/2012) -- Golfers can be a hardy lot; threatening skies and a chilly breeze over Lyman Orchards Golf Club failed to dissuade over sixty of them from taking to the Player Course for Silver Lake's Sixth Annual Golf Tournament on June 5th. Their spirits defied the skies as well, as with cheerful smiles (and the occasional groan of dismay as a ball went awry) they drove and chipped, chipped and putted, and ended their time together with a merry awards banquet. The rain held off, and enough sunbeams poked through the clouds to leave a rosy glow on the golfers' faces as they headed home, having raised thousands of dollars for the Connecticut Conference's outdoor ministries.
The Newtown team of Matt Crebbin, Burt Demarche, Skip Roberts, and John Truitt took the day's honors with a final score of 63, eight under par. Second place went to the Southbury team of Rick Hall, Joe LaCava, Bruce Pitman, and Walter Pitman, with a score of 64. Bruce Pitman also won the prize for closest to the pin on the sixteenth hole, while the day's longest drive on the ninth hole was won by Barb Morris among the women and Skip Roberts among the men.

Tournament and non-tournament players alike were greeted by sponsorship signs at each hole, and generous donors contributed toward the prizes and raffle gifts. Members of the Silver Lake and Conference Board of Directors were on hand to thank to competitors, administer the contests, and admire the good shots (and the good sportsmanship).
Silver Lake Conference Center, the Connecticut Conference's outdoor ministry site in Sharon, provides a summer camping experience of blessed community, spirited learning, and "a chance to be myself" for over 1100 young people during the summer. Its year-round retreat facilities welcome thousands more youth and adults during fall, winter, and spring, both for programs developed by the Conference Center staff and those created by the groups themselves. Registration for summer conferences is now open, and though they're going fast, there are spaces still!
