From the Public Policy Advocate
Kim Harrison

As I reflect on nearly 18 years representing the Conference’s views to the General Assembly, I’m struck by how the “people in the pews” are often way ahead of policymakers in developing social justice policy. Such progressive resolutions from the Connecticut Conference Annual Meetings that spring to mind include support of a state income tax, civil unions, reproductive freedom, gun safety legislation and opposition to casino gambling. Many times, resolutions are further refined every few years, until they evolve into a clear body of policy. It is those actions that guide and direct my activity as the Conference’s Public Policy Advocate.

I’ve looked at resolutions that are over 100 years old and it is clear that social justice has always been a central component of our faith. Social justice is still a focal point for our Conference. Some people say the church “shouldn’t meddle in politics” in the quest for justice and peace. Working for justice is not political. It is a vital part of the church’s spiritual journey. Our faith teaches us to speak out on behalf of the oppressed and marginalized, to care for humanity and speak for justice. Nothing gives me greater pride than to look out in a public hearing room and see many of our clergy in attendance, having our Conference Minister take part in a press conference dealing with a specific piece of legislation, or being called by a member of one of our churches to discuss where their legislator may stand on a particular issue. These are the kind of actions that truly do change hearts and minds.

With the 2007 legislative session recently completed, planning for the 2008 session will begin soon. As temperatures drop and the leaves fall, the Public Policy Advocacy Ministry, whose work is supported entirely by the Frank Baker Fund, will focus on the resolutions passed at Annual Meeting, as well as issues that remain from the last session. Resolutions from past years that might be relevant to current issues coming before the legislature also will be studied. In November, I will meet with the Conference Minister to discuss the possibilities for legislation and together we will decide where the Conference’s voice will have the greatest impact in the 2008 General Assembly.

The banner declares that the UCC is “50 Years Bold.” Indeed, the church has every right to be a bold, prophetic and moral voice for our times.
