This year has been an extremely busy and exciting one for New Samaritan Corporation. We determined that it was imperative that we increase the public visibility of New Samaritan Corporation as the preeminent authority on affordable housing for the elderly in the state of Connecticut. We continued to educate members of the legislature on the affordable housing needs in our communities, hosting legislative breakfasts and one-on-one meetings with representatives to be sure they understand the concerns of seniors and an aging population. These activities resulted in a $300,000 grant from the state to support our work and a three percent increase in support for our nursing home, Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.
We also successfully implemented a new financial software system in our management office, enabling us to offer more services to the sites we serve and prepare more comprehensive financial reports for their boards of directors.
For the first time in the company’s history, we have joint boards of directors meetings, which run simultaneously, enabling our New Samaritan board and management company boards to more effectively address the issues facing both companies, and giving both boards a better understanding of the workings of the entire organization. This has created an opportunity to streamline the way we manage the operation of our business. We continue to work on board development and recruitment, to ensure that we have the best financial, healthcare, management and development professionals we on our board. I also note, with enthusiasm, that Bill Fairbairn, a member of the CT Conference Board of Directors, this year was elected President of the New Samaritan Board and all of its affiliated corporations.
Our initiatives and vision for the future take into account the good work and contributions of an exceptionally dedicated staff. New Samaritan Corporation is, now more than ever, looking to shine into the future in new and exciting ways, expanding on our founding principles and exploring new avenues in affordable housing opportunities.
