Amistad to Set Sail--With Your Help

NEW HAVEN (04/02/2007) -- On June 21, the freedom schooner Amistad will set sail from New Haven on the 18-month “Atlantic Freedom Tour.”

Under the banner “Confronting the Past; Transforming the Present,” the ship will visit England to help commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the former British Empire. It will then travel to West Africa and Sierra Leone.

Your church can be part of this historic event by sponsoring a day of the trip. The cost of a day’s sponsorship is $2,500, which must be received by the Amistad Foundation by June 10 in order to qualify as a sponsor. Churches can also join together in sponsorship.

Your pastor will be invited to write a message in keeping with Amistad’s commitments and it will be posted on the Amistad website, along with acknowledgement.

Our Congregational forebears in Connecticut played a central role in the first human rights trial in the United States, helping to secure freedom for the Amistad captives. Their struggle for freedom and against slavery changed the course of U.S. history.

Show support for our enduring commitment to issues of human rights and freedom, justice and peace.
