HARTFORD (03/27/2007) -- Chung Hyun Kyung, theologian, author and producer of an award-winning series on the power of women in world religions, will participate in the United Church of Christ's all-day "Synod in the City," June 23 in Hartford.
As part of the UCC's 50th anniversary General Synod, June 22-26, "Synod in the City" will include dozens of performers, speakers, theologians, musicians, and multimedia events at venues throughout downtown Hartford. The day-long celebration will culminate with the UCC's churchwide birthday party at the Hartford Civic Center.
Professor Chung is an Associate Professor of Ecumenical Theology at Union Theological Seminary, which is historically related to the UCC. She is a lay theologian of the Presbyterian Church of Korea. Her research and writings take feminist spiritual themes. She also has produced an eight-part series, "The Power of Women in World Religions," broadcast on Korean Public TV.
"Professor Chung Hyun Kyung lives what she teaches, and teaches what she has learned firsthand," says the Rev. Lois Powell of the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries. "She has done groundbreaking theological work from the perspective of women's lives around the world, challenging old paradigms and offering exciting and liberating understandings of who we are as the human community."
Chung is a founding member of the International Interfaith Peace Council, and is currently on sabbatical, doing research through an immersion experience with Muslim women who are involved in peacemaking work in 16 different Islamic countries. She hopes this project will provide a creative method of Christian feminist dialogue with the Islamic world.
