CT Women of the UCC Embrace “the Cookie Legend” for General Synod

HARTFORD (10/03/2006) -- One of the notable but quiet traditions of the United Church of Christ General Synod has been for the host Conference to provide homemade cookies to those who attend. The denomination's 50th anniversary is expected to attract larger numbers than ever before, requiring possibly 14,000 dozen cookies for the five day event!

The Connecticut Women of the United Church of Christ have determined to organize and meet the challenge. In a recent mailing, they have asked local church pastors to recruit a coordinator in each congregation. CT Women will need an average of 50 dozen cookies from each church to welcome delegates and visitors in the traditional style.

Though the numbers appear daunting, the leaders of CT Women believe that the work divided among 248 churches is more than manageable, and Connecticut can extend a truly extravagant welcome to Synod attendees from around the nation and around the world.

The letter to pastors follows:

September 2006

Dear UCC Pastor,

As you know, The General Synod of the United Church of Christ is being held in Hartford on June 22-26, 2007. This is a very exciting time and the Hospitality Committee wishes to welcome the delegates and their guests and make them feel at home. A part of this welcoming process has been embraced by the Connecticut Women of the United Church of Christ (CTWUCC) in the form of continuing the Cookie Legend.

The Cookie Legend is continued when the state hosting Synod provides homemade cookies to all those who attend. The CTWUCC wishes to provide homemade cookies to all of the delegates and guests at General Synod. This is a fair number of cookies, about 14,000 dozen cookies for the 5-day period! We are asking you to help by passing this letter along to a person in your congregation who will be the contact person and the coordinator from your church. We are asking for 50 dozen cookies from each of the 248 churches.

Below is a bulletin insert that can be reproduced and handed out to inform congregations about the Cookie Legend. Enclosed is a flyer that can also be distributed to members of your congregation. At the bottom of the flyer is a tear-off portion to be mailed back to the Conference office. We will contact those who mail back slips.

We are looking forward to talking with a representative from your faith community in the near future.

Co-chairs,
Rev. Melanie Enfield and Margie Kreitler
