BRIDGEPORT -- The Fall Session of the 2008 Annual Meeting will be held at Central High School, 1 Lincoln Boulevard in Bridgeport this coming weekend, October 17-18. Keynote speaker the Rev. Stephen Gray will highlight the event on the theme Nurturing Generosity. Conference delegates will also consider the 2009 budgets, a proposed revision to the bylaws, a resolution, and other business. 10/15/2008
SHARON -- Silver Lake Conference Center will sponsor a second international youth work project trip in April 2009. The new group of twenty high school-age students will return to Oaxaca, Mexico, to work with Simply Smiles, assisting families living at the edge of a dump in building simple homes. 10/15/2008
HARTFORD -- Connecticut's State Supreme Court has ruled that preventing same-gender couples from obtaining and using marriage licenses violates the state's Constitution. 10/10/2008

HARTFORD -- The National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) has named Wednesday, November 12th, as a National Day of Witness against the "legal" abuse of detained persons by government officials. On that day, religious delegations across the country will visit members of Congress. Local organizers have scheduled events in conjunction with the national effort, including an ecumenical worship service and a visit to Senator Dodd's Hartford office. 10/08/2008
HARTFORD -- The Connecticut Conference has called Karen E. Ziel, a Commissioned Minister in the United Church of Christ since 1996 and a Christian Educator for almost 25 years, to serve as the new Minister of Christian Education. A former Director of the Conference's Ruth Dudley Resource Center, she is currently Minister of Discipleship Education for with the Congregational Church of South Glastonbury, UCC. She will begin her new ministry on November 3rd. 10/03/2008
NEW HAVEN -- The name "Amistad" graces Amistad United Church of Christ in Hartford and the Chapel at the UCC's national offices in Cleveland, and it is no wonder. In 1839, our Congregational forebears organized to defend 53 African captives from the modern Sierra Leone who had escaped from their captivity aboard the Spanish cargo schooner La Amistad, and lived one of the foundational stories of social justice work for our United Church of Christ. The Freedom Schooner Amistad, built at Mystic Seaport with partial funding from the United Church of Christ, continues the civil rights legacy of our denomination and does so proudly, flying the UCC flag alongside the Stars and Stripes and the national flags of her diverse crew. 10/02/2008
SHARON -- Hester Kim, a professor of American Literature in Korea, is spending her sabbatical at the University of Connecticut. She wrote this appreciation of her experience having served as a counselor during the Sacred Journey conference at Silver Lake in August. 10/02/2008

HARTFORD -- Connecticut's Conference Minister, the Rev. Dr. Davida Foy Crabtree, began treatment in August for breast cancer. In a message to the Conference's authorized ministers, she declared her determination to overcome the disease and her total confidence in God's loving presence with her. 10/02/2008
SHARON -- Over eighty local church pastors, Christian Educators, musicians, and other authorized ministers of the Connecticut Conference gathered for two days at Silver Lake Conference Center for presentations by leaders in preaching and worship, learning ways to make their sermons and liturgies more engaging and more true to the Gospel. Opening with a chorus of drumming, the music of flute, guitar, piano, saxophone and voice surrounded the lectures and addresses. Attendees also explored the conference center, worshiped in its beauty, and some made new ventures on the high ropes challenge course. 10/01/2008
HARTFORD -- Tim Rose, who serves in France on behalf of the Common Global Ministries of the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), will be in Connecticut from September 2008 through May 2009 on a home visit. Tim would welcome invitations to visit local churches throughout his time in the state, and he will be a featured participant in the Fall Session of the Conference Annual Meeting, to be held in Bridgeport on October 17 and 18. 09/26/2008
