1. Pray for people who live in communities affected by hurricanes. 2. To help those affected by disasters you may send gifts payable to your congregation marked for "Hope Shall Bloom" with the request they be sent through the Connecticut Conference office on to Wider Church Ministries. OR 3. Send gifts payable to The Missionary Society of Connecticut and marked in the memo portion "Hope Shall Bloom" to the Connecticut Conference UCC, 125 Sherman Street, Hartford, CT 06105. You may also designate gifts for "Back Bay Mission." |
On August 29th, the Category 4 Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast of the United States, bringing extremely high winds, torrential rain, and in places a twenty-foot storm surge. Four weeks later, Hurricane Rita hit the Gulf Coast just west of Katrina's landfall, extending the damaged area and hampering recovery efforts.
The cities of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Biloxi, Mississippi, suffered extraordinarily heavy damage. New Orleans, which lies below sea level, was flooded throughout three-quarters of its area. Portions of East Biloxi, where the United Church of Christ's Back Bay Mission has served the city's poorest residents for nearly eighty years, has had entire neighborhoods completely leveled. Hundreds of thousands have evacuated; many of these have lost their homes and livelihoods permanently. The Connecticut Conference must respond.
Based on the ideas contributed at a gathering on September 7th, the Connecticut Conference has selected six focus areas for its relief efforts:
