Faith Information and Discussion Online

A Guide to FIDO*

FIDO* users engage in two different kinds of activity: Information Lists and Discussion Forums. The two call for different kinds of effort on the part of the user. One needs only reading when an email arrives; the other calls for participation in an email conversation. Both will help the user learn and grow in their faith and in the life of the Connecticut Conference.

Information Lists

Through Information Lists, users receive news via email from the Conference's staff and volunteers. This news is prepared by those staff members and other persons and provided to the users (subscribers) on a basis which is determined by the Information List Moderator. Some lists may be very active, while others are not used as frequently.

The particular news items are chosen by the list moderators. Subscribers who wish to submit items for publication on a list should email them to the moderator. The moderator's email address will be included in the list welcome message and frequently in mail from the list itself.

Discussion Forums

In Discussion Forums, users are invited to take an active part in the content of the forum. All subscribers are able to send email to the forum address (which will look something like MyForum-L@lists.ctucc.org). When it is received, it is remailed to all the forum participants, who can then read it, consider it, and respond to it via email. In the vast majority of email clients, clicking the "Reply" button will create a new email to the forum which is correctly addressed.

The activity level of the forums, then, is completely in the hands of their members. We suggest sending a "Hello" message to the forum when you have joined, telling the other members who you are and what interests you.

Signing Up

Those who have not already registered with FIDO* should fill out the form on the FIDO Sign-up Page. You must include your name and email address for FIDO* services to work; if you omit one, you will receive an error message.

The other information requested on that form is for demographic research purposes and to provide the Conference staff with helpful information about our human resources in the Conference. It is not required that you complete this part of the form. However, if you are subscribing to the print version of CONNtact, please complete the postal address information, or we will not be able to fulfill your request.

After clicking the "Sign-Up" button on this page, you will be taken to a second page which lists the FIDO* Information Lists and Discussion Forums. Please check the boxes next to those Lists and Forums that interest you, and click "Sign Up" again.

A few minutes after you register, your email will contain a confirmation message from each List and Forum you joined. You must reply to these messages in order to complete your subscription. Shorly afterwards you will receive the welcome message for each list and forum, describing the means for using the service and the guidelines for conversation. Please keep this message! You may wish to refer to it at a later date.

Adding FIDO* Services

If you have already registered with FIDO* but want to subscribe to an additional Information List or Discussion Forum, click the Registered Users button to go to the Additional Services page. You will need to provide your name and email address in the provided boxes in order add the additional services. Again, you will receive a welcome message from each new list or forum shortly after you submit the form.

Options

Participants in Forums may opt to subscribe to a daily digest. In ordinary use, each member receives email each time someone posts a message to the forum. Digest subscribers, however, receive one email a day containing all the posts to the forum for that day. Those who prefer fewer, longer emails may wish to turn on the digest option. Instructions for doing so are found in the welcome message.
