As Andover Newton Theological School celebrates its 200th Anniversary year, and honor the past, present and future of theological practice in the field of mission ministry, Andover Newton will host an all day mission conference on Saturday May 10th, 2008. In remembering the many who practice ministries far afield, they will bring international speakers from nations impacted by these efforts to bring Christian love, aid, education and support. The conference is designed for lay leaders and local church mission committees, as well as pastors who are interested in developing missional churches. There will be a keynote address, followed by small discussion groups and a panel discussion of the global perspectives on mission. There will also be an exhibition area and an opportunity for small group discussions during lunch. After lunch, there will be 2 sessions of workshops, whose emphasis will cover a wide gamut of topics. We will conclude with worship that remembers God's call to service and lifts up an image that 'we are one family' -- uma familia.

Benefit Concert: Brahms' Requiem: May 18, 4:00 pm

The 60-voice combined choirs of First Congregational Church, Branford, and United Church on the Green, New Haven, join with an orchestra of the area's finest instrumentalists singing the Requiem by Johannes Brahms on Sunday, May 18 at 4:00 p.m. at First Congregational Church, Branford as a benefit for the Asian Rural Institute, an international training center in Japan where grassroots rural leaders from developing countries in Asia, Africa and the Pacific study sustainable, organic agriculture techniques, leadership and community development. American Friends of ARI began here at First Congregational Church Branford in 1982 under the leadership of Pastor Roger Manners. The choirs are joined by baritone Keith Spencer, who sang the role of Elijah for us in 2006, and soprano Kathryn Thomas. The Rev. Kathryn Nichols and Dr. Mark Brombaugh, music directors of the two churches, will share the conducting. Baritone Keith Spencer has received great praise for dramatic operatic performances in New York, Philadelphia, Greensboro, Santa Fe, and with the Virginia Opera, and has performed with orchestras throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. An established figure in the area of contemporary music, with a number of premiere performances to his credit, Mr. Spencer made his New York recital debut in 1995 with the Hugo Wolf Society at Merkin Concert Hall. He has received various competition honors including first place in the Bel Canto Singers of York Competition and regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Asian Rural Institute (ARI) is an international training center in Nasushiobara, Japan where grassroots rural leaders from developing countries in Asia, Africa and the Pacific are invited to study sustainable, organic agriculture techniques, leadership and community development. ARI was founded in 1972 by Toshihiro (Tom) Takami, a graduate of Doane College and Yale Divinity School. In the early 1970s, Takami realized how Japanese farmers could share their abilities to produce crops from seemingly inhospitable soil with citizens of countries in Southeastern Asia that had been torn by war and natural disasters. The Rev. Roger Manners, founding pastor of Countryside UCC in Omaha, who knew Tom Takami from his student days at Doane, founded the American Friends of ARI in 1982 in Branford when he was senior pastor at first Congregational Church.

A healthy endowment extends the mission and ministry of a congregation beyond the resources of current members and catalyzes good stewardship within the community. If you have a healthy endowment, it is unlikely that anyone will suggest that the congregation just give it all away! An unhealthy endowment is, at best, a mixed blessing. While providing financial resources, it becomes a "crutch" a congregation depends on and undermines good stewardship on an individual and congregational level. A healthy endowment is growing and provides increased support for mission and ministry. An unhealthy endowment is shrinking and unable to sustain support. A healthy endowment creates opportunities for discussion of wealth and good stewardship. An unhealthy endowment is shrouded in secrecy and contributes to a culture where "we don't talk about money." Come to one of these workshops and learn about the characteristics of healthy endowments and what can be done to make your endowment healthier. We will also discuss important new legislation adopted in Connecticut that governs endowment management in churches and other non-profits. But wait, there's more! We will also review the role of Investment Committees and responsibilities. This event is intended to be interactive and an opportunity to learn from and share with other congregations with endowments. Workshop leader Charlie Kuchenbrod is the Connecticut Conference's Associate Conference Minister for Endowment Ministries.

Wild Christ: The Radiant Wilderness of the Divine: June 27 - 29

It's time for the most popular global religion to acknowledge that it has become the Prodigal Son. That it has wondered off into the politics and madness of humanity and squandered its creative vitality. Our most awakened spiritual institutions have avoided workshops that touch upon Christ's teachings, because the heartwood of Christianity has been used to build cages for centuries. Join three artists and teachers Paul and Tim Frantzich and David Hawkinson, as they walk into the radiant wilderness of Christ using song, ritual, yoga and story. Open your hearts and minds as "The Firebird" (a folktale of Russia) is heard along side sacred biblical text. Let it speak with a new voice, free of judgment, free of rhetoric and the smell of mothballs. This is not your parent's religion...it's your life. Christianity is asking us to let it rise, with all great religions, to the high road of The Heart. "I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water." --Christ Lets drop keys to the rowdy prisoners...all night long.

Roots and Branches: UCC Musicians Association Conference 2008: July 14 - 17

Sponsored by the United Church of Christ Musicians Association, Conference 2008 is a three and half day gathering of musicians and clergy to explore the roots of our calling as worship leaders and their implications for today. By looking at the history of our faith and worship styles, we can then delve into new ways to express that faith. All church musicians, clergy and lay people are welcome. Presenters include the Rev. Victoria Sirota, an Episcopal priest and accomplished organist; the Rev. Bernard Wilson, senior minister of Norfield Congregational Church in Weston, CT and known as a dynamic preacher; Michael Kemp, a national leader in the choral field; Connecticut composer Peter Niedmann; organists Patricia Snyder and Peter Krasinski; and handbell director Daniel Moore. Workshops will cover topics such as composition, choral techniques and choral music, drumming, handbells, organ improvisation, playing hymns, motivation and recruiting for choirs, and tantalizing issues such as perspectives on the worship wars, "saving" the UCC, finding the voice of the congregation, bridging the ethnic/cultural divide and more. Also included are worship services, plenary sessions, all-conference rehearsals, exhibits, dinners, an organ concert in the city of Portland, Maine and lots of social/networking time. The lovely facilities of the Woodfords Church will be our home and we will visit the historic Tory Hill Meeting House in Buxton where we will enjoy contra dance music on the village green. For a printed brochure, contact Paul Schnell or go to www.uccma.org (see link below).

The theme of this retreat for confirmation class members and advisers is "Unity in the Body of Christ." The purpose of these retreats is not to teach confirmation all in one weekend, but to help build community and to ask the questions that are key to a Confirmation process. This is a unique opportunity for young people engaged in the active process of understanding their faith to encounter other youth and adults working on the same issues in a beautiful setting.
