South Congregational-First Baptist Church in New Britain (“South Church”) is seeking an Interim Director of Music.  South Church is an Open, Welcoming & Affirming member of the United Church of Christ and the American Baptist Churches.  Located in downtown New Britain, Connecticut, South Church has a rich musical history as well as a commitment to minister in the heart of the city.  The successful candidate will be a creative team player with excellent organizational, leadership, and musical skills.  The position is for 30 hours per week and benefits are available.

Function
The Interim Director of Music plans develops and administers a complete music program for the church, including the ministry of music in worship, and opportunities for outreach through fine arts in our congregation and community; serves as organist and choirmaster; supervises all professional and volunteer music personnel and assists the South Congregational-First Baptist church pastors in their endeavors for the spiritual welfare of the church.
Accountability
The Interim Director of Music is directly responsible to the Lead Pastor and congregation through its elected Church Council.  He/she has authority in the administration of the church’s music program and in the supervision of professional and volunteer music personnel, subject to the limits of accepted professional principles and practice, church policies and procedures, and approval of the Board of Worship, Music and the Arts (WMA).
Example of Duties

  1. Works with pastors and staff in the design, development and execution of all worship services; participates in all regular and special services of the church.
  2. Directs the Chancel Choir in rehearsal and worship.   
  3. Hires, supervises and evaluates the performance of the professional soloists/section leaders of the Chancel Choir; and hires supervises the Music Secretary.
  4. Selects, orders and maintains, in coordination with Music Librarian, all music for the use of the Chancel Choir.
  5. Leads special musical groups as needed, for example, the Tower Chime Guild, handbell and children’s choirs.
  6. Plans, prepares, and executes, the Candlelight Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols with the Music Series at South Church (for additional compensation).
  7. Responsible for providing music at all weddings and funerals held in the church (for additional compensation).
  8. Attends staff, WMA, and Church Council meetings.
  9. Oversees maintenance of the church’s musical instruments and their use.
  10. Arranges for special vocalists or instrumentalists to supplement the music at regular or special services.
  11. Stays current with choral, organ, piano and other instrumental techniques and repertoire.
  12. Reviews and examines music and related literature to broaden the work of the music ministry.
Qualifications
The position of Interim Director of Music requires substantial professional training and experience in organ, piano, choral conducting, sacred music and music education.  The preferred candidate should be a degreed professional or have the equivalent work experience. as well as experience in administration and supervision of volunteer and professional musicians.
